Short Chronology of Historic Events Described by Wa’xaid

c. 9,000 years ago Waa-mis founds the Haisla/Xenaksiala settlements in the Gardner/ Douglas area.

1763 Royal Proclamation.

1793 Europeans arrive: Captain George Vancouver and Alexander Mackenzie.

1831 Hudson’s Bay Company establishes Fort Simpson.

1862 Smallpox brought to Fort Simpson, followed by gunboats.

1874 Founding of first residential school at Fort Simpson.

1890 Creation of the Indian Reserves around Kitamaat and Kitlope.

1892 Arrival of missionary school in Kitlope.

1917 Start of influenza epidemic.

1920 Indian Act makes it illegal to withhold an Indian child aged seven to 15 from attending school.

1929 G’psgolox pole taken from the Kitlope.

1931 Native Brotherhood founded. Guy Williams, Cecil’s uncle, is an early leader in the Brotherhood.

1934 Canadian census conducted. 30 Kitlope people left.

1946 Miller Bay Hospital is finally opened for Indigenous people suffering from tuberculosis.

1947 Guy Williams, with the Native Brotherhood, goes to Ottawa to plead for revisions to the Indian Act.

1948 Amalgamation of Kitamaat (Haisla) with the Kitlope/Kemano villages (Xenaksiala).

1949 An Act to Promote the Industrial Development of the Province is passed, greenlighting Alcan and Kemano River diversion.

1958 Prince Rupert riot of over a thousand Indigenous people against discrimination.

1964 Gordon Robinson, Haisla leader, draws attention to impacts of pollution on the Kitimat River.

1965 Awarding of Tree Farm Licence 41 (Kitlope, Kemano, Kildala and parts of Kitimat watersheds) to Eurocan Pulp and Paper Company.

1978 Haisla file a comprehensive land claim. Premier Bill Vander Zalm comes up with the “solution” to ship “urban Indians” back to their reserves.

1980 West Fraser buys a 40 per cent interest in Eurocan and starts plans to log the Kitlope.

1987 Meech Lake Accord enshrines protection of “existing” Aboriginal rights.

1989 Boston Men and others start joining the Haisla in the Magic Canoe.

1990 Haisla serve injunction to Government of Canada against any more incursions.

1994 The Province of British Columbia and the Haisla Nation announce that the Kitlope will be fully protected and jointly managed.

1995 Kemano Completion Project is halted.

1995 Arthur Plint pleads guilty to 18 counts of sexual assault

2000 at Alberni Indian Residential School. Replacement for G’psgolox pole travels to Sweden.

2001 Chief Justice Brenner hands down a judgement on the Alberni case against the Government of Canada and United Church of Canada.

2006 G’psgolox pole returns to Kitamaat Village.

2010 Eurocan close its doors permanently.

2010 Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines Ltd. submits application to National Energy Board for a port at Kitimat.

2011 LNG Canada buys old Eurocan plant for production of liquified natural gas and port.

2013 World Indigenous Network in Darwin, Australia, features Cecil Paul.
